Peak months
The biggest swells reach Nazaré between late October and early March, when North Atlantic storms send long-period groundswell straight into the Nazaré Canyon. The canyon focuses the energy directly onto the cliffs at Praia do Norte, doubling wave height compared to the beaches just south.
On average there are 6–10 truly massive days each winter. The rest of the season still produces excellent watching — solid 3–5 metre swell almost every week.
Where to watch — for free
The clifftop viewing platform at Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo (the red fort and lighthouse on the headland) is the iconic spot. It's free, open most days, and puts you almost directly above the takeoff zone.
- Best free spot: the lighthouse fort viewing platform (10–15 min walk from Sítio).
- Alternative: the cliff path north of the lighthouse — longer lens, fewer people.
- Avoid: the beach itself on big days. Sneaker sets routinely sweep across it.
The major events
The WSL Tudor Nazaré Big Wave Challenge is the marquee event — a holding window through the winter, called on at 48 hours' notice when the right swell lines up. The Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge runs alongside it for tow teams. Both are free to watch from the headland.
How to know it's on
