Yes — but not where you think. Why the town beach is great for first-timers, and why you should stay out of Praia do Norte.
The town beach (Praia da Nazaré) has gentle, beach-break waves most of the year and is where local surf schools run their lessons. Praia do Norte, the famous big-wave spot, is for expert big-wave surfers only — it is one of the most dangerous waves in the world and is not a place to learn.
Best months for beginners: May to October.
